Our Upcoming KAL Will Begin Monday, October 19th!
Hey Guys!
Get your needles and cotton ready...our next KAL is coming up!
It will begin on MONDAY, OCTOBER 19th!
* For this pattern you will need:
Size US 6#/4mm needles
1 ball cotton yarn or cotton tots
* For the colour think HALLOWEEN!!...Orange, Black, Green, Purple, Grey. This dishcloth pattern will have a Halloween theme to it. But as always, don't worry if you don't have these colours on hand...whatever you have will do too.
* The designer has given us the option of using two different colours which will give it Contrasting Stripes on the top and bottom of this pattern.
* In her sample she has used Orange and Black...orange being the main colour and black being the contrast colour so you would need more orange than black if this is the option you choose.
* I will be using a Dark Green for my main colour and a Deep Purple for my Contrast Colour.
* If you choose to use more than one colour for your kal I will write a little note to let you know when to change colours.
* PLEASE NOTE: It's not necessary at all to use more than one colour for this kal, it's just been suggested by the designer for something fun and a little different!
* And remember, if you're not the tightest of knitters don't be afraid to go with a smaller needle size for a better stitch definition.
* The instructions will be emailed daily as "special notice" to ensure that everyone gets them...if you are on daily digest and you don't want to wait for the digest to come in for your daily rows, you can always come to the group site to see the posted rows. As soon as I post them they will appear on the group!
* I will also be posting the links for the daily rows on our Group Blog as well as daily progress pics so feel free to check our blog.
* After I post them to the group, I will make a text copy of them just in case anyone misses the post, and I will put them in the group FILES section under, "Our Group Knit Alongs"...just look for "October 2009 KAL".
Looking forward to next Monday Morning!
Hugs,

Our September 2009 KAL ~Sampler Washcloth~
Here is our September 2009 Mystery Dishcloth Knit Along, Sampler Washcloth designed by Brynne Sutton.
Big thanks to Brynne for allowing us to use her pattern for our group kal!
Thanks to everyone for knitting along with us! I chose to use a few different colours for mine...Shrimp, Persimmon, and Geranium...I quite like it. I hope you all enjoyed this one as much as I have.
This pattern can be found here in Brynne's pattern collection on Ravelry as a free download.
I have created a photo album on the group in our Photos Section called, September 2009 KAL...here is the link if you'd like to post your photo.
Our next group kal will start October 19th and it will be a HALLOWEEN theme cloth so start looking for some nice halloween colours. If you would like you can do it in a single solid colour or like our last kal, you can use a couple different colours. The designer has given us the option of using two different colours which gives it a pretty neat look. In her sample she has used Orange and Black...orange being the main colour and black being the contrast colour so you would need more orange than black if this is the option you choose. More info will follow later about our October KAL...I just wanted to let you know to start looking for your halloween colours, whether it be orange and black or green and black.
Thanks again for knitting along with us!
Take care.
Hugs,
:o)

Our September 2009 Mystery Dishcloth Knit Along Starts September 21st!
Get your needles and cotton ready...our next KAL is coming up!
It will begin on MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 21st...1 week from today!
For this pattern it's been suggested by the designer that you will need:
- 1 skein 100% Cotton
- Size US 7/4.5 mm needles
- 2 stitch markers(optional)
For the colour I'm leaving it all up to you guys! Whatever your little heart desires, whatever you have on hand, whether it be a SOLID cotton, a VARIEGATED cotton, a STRIPED cotton, a SPECKLED cotton, or even a combination of colours! I'm using 3 different colours for mine just for funzies! I have chosen to use the colours SHRIMP, PERSIMMON, and GERANIUM. If you choose to use more than one colour for you kal I will write a little note for you to let you know when to change colours...it's not necessary at all to use more than one colour for this kal, I am just choosing to for something fun and different!
When I test knit this pattern, I chose to use 4mm knitting needles and it turned out really nice...the pattern calls for 4.5mm but don't be afraid to use something smaller for a better stitch definition.
The instructions will be emailed daily as "special notice" to ensure that everyone gets them...if you are on daily digest and you don't want to wait for the digest to come in for your daily rows, you can always come to the group site to see the posted rows. As soon as I post them they will appear on the group!

Our June 2009 KAL

♥ June 2009 KAL ~ Day 5 ~ Friday, June 19, 2009
Posted by Rachel at Monday, June 15, 2009 0 comments
Upcoming KAL Announcement Starts Monday, June 15th!
This KAL has been designed by a wonderful designer! I've been a huge fan of her work for years so I was thrilled to bits when she gave us permission to use one of her patterns! I had seen this pattern years ago and for whatever reason it had disappeared from it's online home...but after some heavy hunting through all my printed out patterns from over the years, I found it along with the designer's contact info and I was so happy to find out that she didn't mind a bit if we used it for our group knit along this month!
For this pattern it's been suggested that you will need:
* Cotton Worsted Weight Yarn(solid colour of your choice)
As you will notice, yes I did mention the dreaded "C" word...cable. This will be our first attempt at a group knit along with cables. There's no need to fret though if cables make you a bit squeamish...this isn't a cable-infested cloth so if cables are new to you this is probably a great starter project for you...there will only be 3 rows where you will need to cable so please don't be discouraged to try this one. There are tons of help online as well as tons of really helpful people here on the group!
Here are some really good video tutorials if you'd like to study them a bit before our kal begins on Monday:
* How to Knit a Cable Stitch:
* Crossing Cables with a Cable Needle:
The instructions will be emailed daily as "special notice" to ensure that everyone gets them...if you are on daily digest and you don't want to wait for the digest to come in for your daily rows, you can always come to the group site: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Rachels_Knitting_Room/ to see the posted rows. Our May 2009 KAL Announcement!
Hey Guys!
.
Get your needles and cotton ready...our next KAL is coming up! It will begin on MONDAY, MAY 18, 2009!
.
This KAL will be designed and hosted by me this month!
.
For this pattern you will all need Size US 5 or US 6 (3.75 mm or 4mm)
.
PLEASE NOTE: The needle size is really up to you...but if you are a loose knitter, I would strongly suggest a smaller needle size for you so your stitches really "POP" out better! When you knit loose, the "picture" stitches sometimes get lost with the background stitches. Remember...the tighter you knit, the better...so if you're not a tight knitter, try changing the size of your needles...let your needles do all the work for you :o)
.
You will need 1 ball of 100% worsted weight cotton.
.
The colour is knitter's choice but it is strongly recommended that a SOLID colour be used and NOT a variegated! This dishcloth will have a Spring/Summer theme to it so something bright and cheerful would work really well!
.
As soon as I post them they will appear on the group!

I will also be posting the links for the daily rows on our Group Blog http://rachelsknittingroom.blogspot.com/ so feel free to check our blog daily.

After I post them to the group, I will make a text copy of them just in case anyone misses the post, and I will put them in the group FILES section under, "Our Group Knit Alongs"...just look for "May 2009 KAL ~ Designed by Rachel".

Feel free to email me at: ramavasc@yahoo.com with any questions you may have about our next KAL!
.
Hope you all had a wonderful Mother's Day!

Looking forward to next Monday Morning!

Our March 2009 KAL Scalloped Table Runner

Hey Guys!
As many of you have already figured out, our March kal pattern has been repeating every 20 rows(we have done 3 repeats so far). Yesterday I gave the instructions if any of you wanted to stop at a dishcloth size or to continue on. What I am going to do is post the pattern in full for the ones that would like to continue on with it. Many of you have guessed that it is a table runner which would be correct! This is such a beautiful pattern that is so adaptable...from a dishcloth, to a placemat, to a tea towel or fingertip towel, to a beautiful table runner. Because of the repetition of the rows you can choose to make it any length you want. If you haven't seen or heard of this pattern yet, it is called Scalloped Table Runner and it has been designed by Amy Stender of Fluid Motion. Thank you Amy for allowing us to use such a wonderful pattern for our group knit along!
Here are a few links from her website of this gorgeous pattern:
http://fluidmotion.blogspot.com/2008/05/knitting-scalloped-table-runner.html
http://fluidmotion.blogspot.com/2008/06/knitting-scalloped-table-runner.html
http://fluidmotion.blogspot.com/2008/07/knitting-scalloped-table-runner.html
I hope to be able to knit the whole table runner for my kitchen table...it's just the thing I need to "pretty it up". I'm going to try to post progress pics on my blog so that it motivates me to work on it on a regular basis.
I have to say a HUGE thank you to our Mandi! What a sweetheart for posting her progress pics for us all to see. I always thought it was better to keep the kals a complete mystery but after doing this one and seeing everyone's positive reactions with Mandi's regular photo postings, I think it was a really good thing! I think it is a good idea for others to check to see if they are doing things right, and I also think that if someone was hesitating whether to do the kal or not, seeing a beautiful progress pic may just be the thing they need to encourage them to do it! So thank you for that Mandi!
Thank you to all our members that decided to join us on this one and to the ones that are going to continue with the pattern. I will also make a photo album in the group called MARCH 2009 KAL.
Hugs,
:o)

OUR MARCH 2009 KAL
~ ~ ~ ~
Posted by Rachel at Monday, March 16, 2009 0 comments
Choosing an Appropriate Colour for Our March KAL
I've been getting a ton of emails regarding the colour for our upcoming kal and I just wanted to post a message to you all about it.
This is going to be a very beautiful show piece in your home...you may want to use it in your kitchen, your dining room or maybe in your living room. When you are done with it you're going to want to show it off! So when you are choosing the colour for it, choose a SOLID colour that would look really pretty in your home. I can't seem to decide whether to use my BOSTON BLUE or a BEIGE of some sort...I'm leaning toward the BOSTON BLUE just to add a little colour to the room where I'm going to display it. White, cream and beige are probably really good colours to go with if you can't make up your mind because they are so neutral and can go with just about anything...but if you are wanting to use a pretty colour I would go with something nice and soft and calm.
I hope that makes it a little easier for you to decide on a colour. I'm getting really excited for this one...it's nice to see everyone else so excited about it as well!
Thanks again to all of you who are choosing to knit this one with us...believe me, if you don't knit it with us, I can guarentee you that you're going to want to knit it after you see it!
Hope you all had a wonderful weekend!
Hugs for a great day,

March 2009 KAL Announcement!

Hey Guys!
Get your needles and cotton ready...our next KAL is coming up! It will begin on MONDAY, MARCH 16, 2009!
We usually knit dishcloths for our group mystery knit alongs but this time I have decided to try something a little different. It will be a larger project than the dishcloths we normally do. We will still be using our worsted weight cotton. It is such a pretty pattern and I just know you'll all love it! For those of our members that don't want to tackle something this large, I believe this pattern can be easily modified into a dish towel or even a dishcloth but I really would love to see us all try and challenge ourselves to make the full pattern...I think that would be awesome. I know the designer is really excited to see all the different results! What I will do is break the pattern up into 5 or 6 days worth of rows like I usually do. At that point the pattern will need to be repeated until you've reached your desired length...this is how the pattern can be modified if you don't want to make the full pattern. I don't want to give away too many hints about the pattern, but I hope I'm making sense. If you have any questions about it you can always email me .
For this pattern it is suggested that you will need:
- 1 BIG ball/cone (solid colour) worsted weight cotton(approx. 508 yards/465m)
PLEASE NOTE: For the colour I would strongly suggest a SOLID colour that suits your kitchen/home.
- US Size 8 (5mm) needles OR size needed to obtain gauge(4st = 1 inch in stockinette stitch)
- 2 stitch markers
This pattern will have knits and purls, and also knit 2 togethers and yarn overs. You can find some very helpful video tutorials here and here.
The instructions will be emailed daily as "special notice" to ensure that everyone gets them...if you are on daily digest and you don't want to wait for the digest to come in for your daily rows, you can always come to the group site to see the posted rows. As soon as I post them they will appear on the group! I will also be posting the links for the daily rows on our Group Blog so feel free to check our blog daily.
After I post them to the group, I will make a text copy of them just in case anyone misses the post, and I will put them in the group FILES section under, "Our Group Knit Alongs"...just look for "March 2009 KAL ~ Hosted by Rachel".
I'm really looking forward to this one! It's going to be a real fun and pretty one! Thanks so much for participating!
Hugs,
:o)

We also discovered that you really can knit with broomsticks:
Or something a little bigger than broomsticks:
But this is the one that really took the cake...knitting with giant machines:
~ ~ ~
We got to read about the "Case of the Exploding Knitting Needle":
~ ~ ~
We added some beautiful new patterns to our "to-do" lists like this gorgeous "Alicia Corset":
And how about these 2 beautiful scarves?:

OUR FEBRUARY 2009 KAL
Posted by Rachel at Monday, February 16, 2009 0 comments
February 2009 KAL Starts February 16th!
Hey Guys! Get your needles and cotton ready...our next KAL is coming up! It will begin on MONDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 2009!
This KAL will be designed and hosted by me this month!
For this pattern you will all need Size US 6 or 7 (4 or 4.5mm), the needle size is really up to you...but if you are a loose knitter, I would strongly suggest a smaller needle size for you...even as small as US 5 (3.75mm) so your stitches really "POP" out better! When you knit loose, the "picture" stitches sometimes get lost with the background stitches. Remember...the tighter you knit, the better...so if you're not a tight knitter, try changing the size of your needles...let your needles do all the work for you :o)
You will need 1 ball of 100% worsted weight cotton. Any colour will do...this cloth will have somewhat of a Valentine Theme to it so feel free to use a shade of red or pink but if you haven't these colours on hand, no need to worry...any other colour will be fine!
Our January 2009 KAL
Posted by Rachel at Monday, January 19, 2009 0 comments
Our January 2009 KAL Announcement!
This mystery dishcloth Knit Along has been designed by our Group Moderator, Marilyn Wallace. This will be another one of Marilyn's Cryptic Message KALS! She has designed a dishcloth with a cryptic message in it that we have to try and figure out. There will be a little contest to go along with it as well! Naturally Marilyn and I will be excluded from this contest as the group owner and moderator, but everyone else is more than welcome to join along in the guessing fun!
* You must be a member of Rachel's Knitting Room Yahoo Group to be eligible to win.
* There will be absolutely NO GUESSING ON THE GROUP...all guesses will have to be done privately by emailing Marilyn
* Submissions ONLY will be accepted AFTER the final rows of the kal have been posted.
* PLEASE put, "Cryptic Message Theme KAL Contest" in the subject line when submitting your answer to Marilyn.
* Only 1 guess per person will be allowed for this.
* It's not a race to see who guesses correctly first, as I have picked a random number without Marilyn knowing.
* Marilyn has graciously offered to send the winner of this contest a little prize. The Prize will be knitting related & your snail mail needs to be submitted to Marilyn privately upon notification of the winner within a week or another winner will have to be chosen.
For this pattern, Marilyn suggests size 4 mm short, circular needles (knit straight on them) or US#6...please feel free to use your straights if you do not have any circs...Marilyn always suggests knitting straight with your circular needles which is a really good tip so you never drop the other needle and also it's makes for a more compact project.
Please Note: If you are a loose knitter, I would strongly suggest a smaller needle size for you so your stitches really "POP" out better...especially if you are knitting letters!
You will all need 1 ball cotton yarn for a Dish Cloth OR 1 ball CottonTots for a soft, Spa Cloth. Any colour would work well, but it is strongly suggested to use a SOLID colour for the pattern to show up well.
Also, a quick little note to all our "lefties" in the group...this cloth will have lettering on it so you might want to read your pattern rows from right to left...just to let you know :o)
After I post them to the group, I will make a text copy of them just in case anyone misses the post, and I will put them in the group FILES section under, "Our Group Knit Alongs"...just look for "January 2009 KAL ~ Created by Marilyn Wallace". Feel free to email me with any questions you may have about our next KAL!
Hugs and Good Luck,

Dishcloth Pattern-a-Day Countdown to Christmas!
Thursday, December 25, 2008
Okay, this cloth is a wee bit more of a challenge, but it is really worth it...as you can see, it's gorgeous! It's such a versatile cloth, you can do it up in just about any colour whether solid, variegated, striped, or twisted.
Many of us in Rachel's Knitting Room did this pattern for our May 2008 Group Knit Along. You can view our finished cloths here.

This is such a nice and easy cloth to do up and you could very easily knit up a towel to match for a cute little set. I especially like this cloth knit with the two contrasting colours like she has done...it really seems to dress up this simple cloth!

Looking for a real creative way to package and wrap these beautiful cloths up?
Stuff them with some nice soaps and tie off the ends with some pretty ribbon and Voila!...a beautiful and creative gift idea!

You can find the instructions for a Bias Square & a Moss Stitch cloth with various crocheted borders such as a Picot edge, a Treble edge, and a Shell edge. I personally LOVE the look of the Crocheted Shell Edge!
At the end of the instructions for the Moss Stitch cloth it tells you to do a row of crab stitch all around the cloth. I hadn't heard of this stitch before so I looked for a video tutorial on you tube and found this helpful video:
